John Adams saw Mozart's Magic Flute as a model for "A Flowering Tree" and used a tale with similarities to other tales dotted around the globe. He makes no attempt to make his music sound the slightest bit Indian - Spanish being his only concession beyond English, largely in the more meaty choruses: The moral of the tale is meant to be /5(15).

A Flowering Tree was commissioned by an international consortium of musical organizations in honor of the th anniversary of Mozart's birth. Adams' opera uses a libretto that he and Peter Sellars constructed from ancient south Indian folk sources. The opera's theme, the adversity faced by a couple before they are united and redeemed, is related to that of Die Zauberflöte, and Adams' opera.
